"For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring." Carl Sagan
Canadian Prime Minister Steve Harper is at it again, doing his George W Bush imitation. How could someone wannabe George W post Iraq, Guantanamo, New Orleans, $9 trillion deficit, Valerie Plame, Wolfowitz, Howard Bolton, Haliburton, a US dollar going to hell and God knows what`s next? Go figure, but now their leadership and wisdom will be put to the test for a day to remember.
April 22 is Earth Day. A celebration of our planet`s potential and a cry for serious solutions to the planetary issues of the day. Where is our sage? I`m looking for a some Churchill or Gandhi or even Carl Sagan.
"It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it." George W Bush
Huh? Well that`s some disdom we can ignore but how about the other guy?
"Mr. Harper said the Conservative government expects to release its plan to address climate change within a month, but indicated it had no interest in pursuing Britain’s lead in legislating binding limits on greenhouse gas emissions." National Post
Ok, so Bush is confused on what pollution is and Harper uses policy confusion to avoid the building consensus that man induced (CO2 emissions) global warming is bringing down the house with "climate change" that will become real expensive for planet earth. Hence the importance of "Earth Day". Maybe these guys need a tune up from the British government, i.e. Nicholas Stern`s Review on the Economics of Climate Change. It`s an eye opener on the costs to this planet if we follow Bush into the self serving muddle of non policy on climate change.
"British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, stated that the Review demonstrated that scientific evidence of global warming was "overwhelming" and its consequences "disastrous" if the world failed to act. " Wikipedia Well, here`s a politician willing to take the plunge on actual leadership. This is what I`m talking about. More do and less don`t. But Canada`s finest, Mr. Harper, is pandering to Big Oil and Dick Cheney with his environmental strategy of denial. The message from the Stern Review, the IPCC, the USC (Union of Concerned Scientists), the American Association for Advancement of Science on climate change and a growing vast majority of credible scientists is sobering. But Steve Harper is cherry picking his science. He`s only buying what he and Big Oil want to hear. He can`t handle the truth.
So our Canadian Prime Minister considers the his role model to the south. He wishes we had followed George into Iraq, he runs Canada`s highest spending government in history (emulating George W`s model), and he ignores our responsibility to curb CO2 emissions for the sake of future generations (just like George). Steve would rather make George W`s Texas barbecue party guest list than worry about the fate of our planet. "You're saying butt-kisser like it's a bad thing?" Homer Simpson Yeah Homer, his moral quotient is way too Republican and Canada doesn't`t need a Republican Prime Minister. I`m anxious for an election in our potentially "great green north". Harper`s got to go!
It is a beautiful day here in southwestern Ontario and I`m ga, ga over blue skies and perfect temperatures. I just can`t believe that this won`t last forever. April 22, Earth Day, is the proper moment to consider educating ourselves with the very available, credible, scientific evidence that is calling for global action. We need to be diligent because these guys don`t care. And their shitey legacy doesn't`t have to drag us down with them. Earth Day, April 22, 2007. The beginning of their end? Blue skies rather than true lies!
